Welcome to my portfolio!

Hello! My name is Jeselyn. I was born and raised in Southern California, then spent three years in Santa Fe, New Mexico working on my undergraduate degree in Creative Writing and Literature. After graduating in 2011 I spent four years in Springfield, Oregon experiencing the "real world" and creating a lifelong identity as a retail employee. I have wanted to be a librarian since the first time I set foot in a public library, well before kindergarten, but did not know what kind of work the path entailed until my college librarian explained it to me. She was the one who told me about the MLIS degree, and that almost everyone you meet who works in a library is required to have one. After a few years stocking shelves and operating cash registers, I was ready to commit to the degree and to my dream future. I entered the SJSU School of Information in the Fall of 2014, and when I signed in for my first class I couldn't even imagine getting to this final step and being so close to graduating with my Master's in Library and Information Science. Hard to believe that time has finally arrived!

Currently, I am working as a Library Assistant with the Phoenix Public Library system in Arizona. I run weekly BabyTime and BabyTime with Sign Language programs, and a monthly Tween Book Club. When I'm not at work you'll find me knitting, watching horror movies, reading anything from fluffy teen fiction to heart wrenching memoirs, and having adventures with my two favorite god children. That's them in the first picture below: Madi is 5 years old and Muffin is 19 months. In the other picture, you get to observe me in my natural habitat: behind the circulation desk at my library.

Below you will find the main points of my e-portfolio and tips about the best way to navigate it.

At the top of the screen you will find a series of tabs. You are currently on the homepage, which is the default page that appears whenever someone navigates to this website. You can also come back to it any time while browsing my portfolio by clicking the "Home" tab.

The "Statement of Professional Philosophy" tab shows a short essay in which I detail my personal librarianship philosophy and career goals.

To view my Statements of Competence and Evidence supporting those statements, click on the "Areas of Competency" tab. This will bring you to a list of clickable links for each Core Competency. Within those pages, you may view each piece of evidence by clicking "View Here" under the assignment's name. The assignments will open in a new window, so your progress reading my Evidence statement is not lost.

Under the "Conclusion" tab you will find a brief statement summarizing my time at SJSU as a Library and Information Science student.

Finally, the "Affirmation" tab shows a signed declaration that all work displayed in this portfolio is mine and I have taken proper steps to protect the information. It also states that all names of partners and group members on assignments have been redacted. This is true where it was possible, and where it was not I received permission from those parties to include their names in my portfolio. Proof of that permission is available upon request.

In assembling this portfolio, I first put this blog together by following examples of previous SJSU students and applying the knowledge I already had of how this website works. After all the pages were created, I added the first part of this introduction and the affirmation. The next step was to write each Competency statement according to my portfolio advisor's specifications. I was able to get my work approved one section at a time as I went along. This made the creation of each statement much easier because I knew I was on the right track. After completing all the Competencies, I wrote my Statement of Professional Philosophy and, finally, the Conclusion. I found it satisfying to completely finish one section before moving on to the next one. Using this method allowed me to complete my portfolio in a timely manner and feel confident in the work I produced. I feel this portfolio is a testament to my organizational skills as well as my dedication to my graduate coursework and my future career as an information professional.
